Tender Skin and the Benefits of Oats

Oats have been used on the skin for over 4000 years and there’s a lot more to the humble grain than you might think. Oats are so fantastic for the skin, that we have put them at the heart of all our products. Here’s some of the reasons why.

Cleansing

Not only do oats provide a natural form of skin nourishment and protection, but they soothe and clean the skin too. It’s all down to each oat flake’s combination of lubricating oils, gentle anti-inflammatory properties and the magic element , ‘Saponins’ ,which gently remove dirt from skin pores.

Moisturising

The lipid and proteins in Oats provide humectant, occlusive and emollient properties, which plainly speaking ,means they help provide a barrier for the skin and keep moisture in . Which is why Oat oil is one of the best moisturising ingredients for sensitive skin.

Anti-inflammatory and Anti-Oxidant

Historically, oats have been used to soothe and calm irritated and inflamed skin. (Every Irish Mum will have had her own version of oat baths for dreaded childhood chicken pox). It’s anti-inflammatory properties work to restore the skins’s natural barrier , reducing itching and tightness.

Exfoliation

For those whose sensitive skin won’t tolerate gritty scrubs, the mild exfoliating nature of oats provide an effective, but kind alternative.

We use Flahavans Organic Oats in all of our hard soaps and Bath Milks , whilst our Body Oils are made from a blend of Oat oil which provides a gentle skin softening element to the oil.
